The 2023 Kids’ Choice Awards were magical.

Not only did we see MrBeast take home Favorite Male Creator, Jenna Ortega win Favorite Female TV star, and The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder secure Favorite Kids TV show, but the cast of Monster High: The Movie dropped some filming secrets and gave viewers an early look at their upcoming sequel.

Less than a year removed from the first Monster High, which was nominated for Favorite Movie at this year’s award show – the beasties are back with a second film that is set to release this fall on Paramount+ and Nickelodeon.

Based on the popular Mattel toy franchise, Monster High is the company’s first live-action showcase of iconic monsters and creatures. The first movie focuses on Clawdeen Wolf (Miia Harris), who learns to embrace her true self with the help of her new friends Frankie Stein (Ceci Balagot) and Draculaura (Nayah Damasen), as she tries to save the school from half-human, half-monster Mr. Komos (Kyle Selig).

Details to the plot of the sequel are being kept secret, but Case Walker – who will reprise his role as Deuce – says this one is bigger and better than ever.

“We just took everything to the next level,” shared Walker. “We all worked hard, we’re more of a family this time and you can see that in the production. It’s gonna be really fun.”

The newest film will also be a musical, and Justin Derickson agrees that it will be a lot of fun.

“You can expect a little bit of dancing, little bit of singing. You could expect a little bit of flare with some costumes and some of our looks,” said Derickson, who plays Heath Burns. “Then with all of that, you can also expect us just having a great time, and you’re going to see that on screen for sure.”

Derickson also let everyone in on a behind-the-scenes secret from filming the first movie: he barely slept before the last dance scene.

“It’s like the biggest energy moment, and I had two hours of sleep and I had to find something in my spirit to make it happen.” Derickson said.

Derickson wasn’t the only one who let the secrets spill. Lina Lecompte revealed the not-so-flattering fact that taking off the prosthetic ears that Lagoona wears is not as easy as it looks.

“I’ll go home and we’ll try and get it off as best we can, but sometimes stuff sticks to my ears still,” Lecompte said. “It’s not fun.”

Nasiv Sall, who plays the blue-skinned Abbey, had similar issues.

“After filming, we’re not the cutest,” Sall said. “Taking off all the blue, my skin’s just cracked. Sometimes at night I’ll find blue in my ear [and] my nose.”

Even Harris, the 5-foot-5 lead of the film, had some interesting information to share about her co-stars.

“Everyone in our cast is so much shorter than you’d think,” Harris said. “Everyone’s really tiny and cute and you just want to pick them up and run around.”

The main point behind Monster High is its message. It touches on inclusion, diversity and trying to fit in. It’s part of what earned them a KCA nomination, something Damasen says is a surreal feeling.

“I can’t even believe it,” Damasen said. “When I first heard it I literally started crying. This whole cast deserves it and I just love them so much.”
